Awesome List of Free Images for Your Blog

Are you having trouble finding free images for your blog?

The following list contains over 40 websites that offer free stock images. You can download them and use them in your blog.

Editor’s Note: August 30, 2018 – I updated this post with Shutterography – It has hundreds of free photos, that’s full of creative, unique and well thought out pictures.

What Makes a Free Image?

Over time, I discovered several sites that offer free images for bloggers. Typically, you can determine whether you can use these images for free by looking at the following sections of a website:

  • About page
  • FAQ
  • Terms of use
  • License

Most of the time, free images are licensed under Creative Commons Zero (CC0). That classification means you can use the image for personal or commercial use. Some sites require attribution. Others will say that it’s not necessary but appreciated.

If you uncover sites with free images, make sure you read their “about page” before using these photos.

What Can You Do When in Doubt?

You can contact the site owner and ask him whether you can re-use their images.

What About Free Images Found in a Google Search?

You found free images from a Google search. Can you use them on your blog?

Sometimes it can be misleading.

To ensure the image is free (e.g., does not belong to Shutterstock et al.), use the following techniques.

  1. With Google Chrome browser, right-click on the image and select “search Google for image.”
  2. Install the TinEye Reverse Image Search extension for Chrome browser. Right-click the picture and select “Search Image on TinEye”.

In the example below, TinEye informs you that the image is published by Shutterstock, Bigstock, etc. That means, stay away from it.

tineye free images

If you prefer not using the Chrome extension, you can go directly to the TinEye website and provide the image URL.

Note: TinEye has extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, IE and Opera.

If you are a Chrome browser fan, take a look to my huge list of recommended Chrome extensions.

Note: make sure you always compress your images. Image compression will improve page load time (an SEO ranking factor). Please consider using the Imagify plugin for peace of mind. This is what I use on this website and I’m very satisfied.

And because of this, picjumbo came up with an easy solution: ‘license’ for using picjumbo photos in your projects for your visitors/members/clients.

The Final Word

Several websites offer free stock photos that you can reuse for your blog. Before using these images, make sure the site owner declared them as CC0 and that he relinquishes rights. Make proper attributions when needed. And don’t sell the pictures.

To improve page load on your website, I recommend that you compress the images with free tools like TinyPNG.

If you prefer automating image compression with a plugin, I recommend Imagify, which I currently use and love.
